It saddens us all that the class of 1987 has suffered the loss of so many of our classmates. We would like to honor those who have passed on with this Memoriam section of the website, as well as the Memory Book that will be coming out in August. We are hoping to have a table set up at the reunion with a copy of obituaries, photos and other memorabilia from these classmate. We are having some trouble finding these things, so if you have anything that we could use, or if you know their parents, siblings or friends where we could get these items, please let us know by going to the “contact us” window on the tool bar, so that we can start getting the items we need put together. Even if all you have is some of their information such as birth date or death date (or an approximate date) that we could use to find more information about them, it would be a great help.

Delbert Hugh Fowler 6/22/1924 ~ 5/24/2007 Delbert Hugh Fowler, age 82, passed away May 24, 2007 of a lung ailment. He was born June 22, 1924, in Santa Monica, California, to Hadley Victor and Ida Cummings Fowler, who raised him and his siblings in Salt Lake City. As a child he loved fishing with his father, and adored his black dog Jack. After graduating from Granite High School in 1942, he worked locally as a machinist, and enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. Del was assigned to the C.B.'s-the Construction Battalion-and operated big machinery on naval bases in Scotland and England during World War II. He finished his service in Rhode Island playing clarinet in a Navy Band. Del credited the GI Bill of Rights with changing the entire direction of his life: he earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences in 1949 because of it, and then followed that with a social work certificate, a master's degree in sociology in 1954, and a Ph. D. in Educational Administration in 1970. He taught school in Idaho, and back in Salt Lake City at Horace Mann Jr. High. He then began progressing through the ranks of educational administration in the Salt Lake City School District, beginning as a counselor and then an assistant principal at West High School, principal at Jordan Jr. High School and finally principal at West High for 6 years, and Highland High for 8. His children have a special fondness for West High School, where they all attended ball games, school plays, and social functions on special outings with their dad. In 1951, Del met Marilyn Oliver on a blind date at which he sported a black eye from an afternoon ball game. He sang love songs to her, accompanying himself on the ukelele, yet she still agreed to marry him, leading to a wedding on June 30, 1952, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and a marriage they treasured for 55 years. Del and Marilyn loved traveling and took their family of five children all over the United States. With a trailer and boat and kids in tow, they made many visits to camping spots throughout Utah. In recent years, he also learned to enjoy cruise ship travel. Two important church experiences to Del were his two-year leadership mission with Marilyn to the LDS South Salt Lake Stake, and an 18-month mission to Bulgaria, where they both taught English in a technical school. They learned to appreciate the US more than ever. Del is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his brother, Robert (Donna); his children, Dan (Jan), Paula, Dianne Wiscomb (Steve), David (Lisa), and Leslie; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Our father's life was filled with happy experiences, rewarding challenges, many many friends, and a loving family. He knew he was a lucky man, and we know we were lucky too. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at the Highland View Ward, 2980 South 2790 East. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Wednesday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com

Hal G. Hardcastle
Hal G. Hardcastle 2/25/1927~12/28/2007 I used to get up every morning and read the obituaries to see if I was still alive. Imagine my surprise this morning when I discovered I had slipped away from my family, friends and all my favorite places on December 28, 2007. I was fortunate enough to be at home at the time surrounded by my loved ones. I'm certain this new trip I'm taking will be very exciting. I've always liked to go to new places. Well it looks like it was the cancers that finally got me, although I fought long and hard.According to the legend, I was born on a dark and stormy night, the only child of Lucinda Mae Olsen and Thomas Harold Hardcastle on February 25, 1927 at Women's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. I spent my adventurous childhood in Sandy. I mooned a lot of trains, played on the beet dump and was even the President of Sandy Junior High. I moved into Salt Lake and graduated from South High in 1945. While at the University of Utah I played a little football, but really enjoyed throwing the hammer for the track team. I graduated with a degree in education 1949 and a few days later on June 16th I married the love of my life Marian Lois Fellows, she always looked great in bobby sox. Together we had three children, Cheryl Groot (Bill), Brett (Donna) and Tom. All three wonderful human beings who made me proud to be their dad. We also have two amazing grandchildren, Cathy and Jon Groot. I hope they know how proud I am of them and how much I love them. I am a teacher. I guess the old adage is true, "A teacher is eternal; they never know where their influence stops." I started out teaching PE at Lincoln Junior High in 1958. I moved to Highland High in 1964 and taught ROTC, health and physical education until 1975 when, with my new masters degree in Education Psychology, I became a counselor. I retired from education 1987. I loved the classroom but felt most fulfilled as a coach. During my time at Highland I was fortunate enough to be able to coach the most wonderful young men in the state including my own son Brett. I coached football, wrestling, cross country and track and field. My sweetest memories of Highland are the days spent on the field with my teams. Hopefully I taught them more than the basics of the sport. The sure taught me a lot. I will miss my many friends and associates; the poker group, the coffee buddies, the fishing and hunting friends, my golf and bowling partners and the many, many parties with so many friends. I will also miss my backyard, my woodworking, the U of U football games and my volunteering. I am a flag-waving patriot and proud to have honorably retired as a Sergeant Major from the 96th US Army Reserve Command at Ft. Douglas after 29 years of dedicated service. My thanks to the doctors who worked so hard to extend my life, Dr. Aslami, Dr. Eyring and Dr. Thorne. Without you and the team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute I never would have made it to my 80th birthday party. To Andrea and Juan of my team from Rocky Mountain Hospice, you're angels, thanks for making my last days ones of dignity and comfort. Finally, to my dear wife, my first love, my last love, and my best love. Thank you for 58 years of travel, parties, and raising our beautiful children. Thanks also for standing by me at the end, I know it was difficult but you were always there. Thank you sweetheart for making me the man I was. I love you. Please join my family as they celebrate my life at noon on January 2, 2008 at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 Highland Drive. Please stop by to comfort my family two hours prior to the service.
